Fractional creative director: what it is, what it costs in the UAE, and when you need one

A senior creative lead for one or two days a week. Here is what that means, what it costs in the UAE, and when it is the right call.

Short answer

A fractional creative director is a senior creative lead who works inside your team one or two days a week, on a monthly fee instead of a salary. They own the creative direction, briefs, vendors and approvals. In the UAE it suits companies with steady creative work but not enough for a full-time hire, and it avoids visa, insurance and end-of-service costs.

What a fractional creative director is

“Fractional” means you get a fraction of a senior person’s week, every week. Unlike a freelancer, they lead the work rather than just make it. Unlike an agency, they sit inside your team and answer to you. Unlike a consultant, they stay to make sure it happens.

OptionHow they workBest for
Freelance designerMakes what you brief, paid by the job or the hourExtra hands when the direction is already clear
AgencyA team that delivers projects or a retainerBig campaigns that need many specialists
ConsultantAdvises, then leaves the doing to youA one-off strategy or audit
Fractional creative directorLeads the creative inside your team, part-time and ongoingSteady creative work that needs senior judgement

The idea is spreading fast. Fractional executives are now common in finance and marketing, and UAE companies are starting to use them too. Adecco describes UAE adoption as early-stage, while Dubai firm Fractional reported a 200% jump in enquiries in the three months to August 2026.

What a fractional creative director does each week

  • Sets the creative standard and protects the brand across every channel and language
  • Writes or signs off briefs, so agencies and designers start from one version
  • Manages vendors: agencies, photographers, render studios, printers and developers
  • Reviews work and signs it off before it ships
  • Plans launches and campaigns with marketing and sales
  • Leads and mentors in-house designers, so the team gets better, not just busier

One honest limit: a fractional lead adds direction, not hours. If your real problem is that there is too much to produce, you need more designers or an agency, and a creative lead to direct them.

What it costs in the UAE

A full-time creative director in the UAE costs much more than the salary. Salary benchmarks vary widely. One tracker, based on job listings, puts senior creative directors at about USD 122,000–180,000 a year, roughly AED 37,000–55,000 a month. On top of that come the costs of employing someone in the UAE:

  • Housing and transport allowances, where they are part of the package
  • Visa and medical insurance
  • End-of-service gratuity: 21 days of basic salary for each of the first five years
  • Recruitment fees, equipment and software
  • Months of searching, plus a notice period, before they start

For comparison, international fractional creative director retainers typically run USD 5,700–9,300 a month for around 13 hours a week. Across fractional leadership roles in the UAE, Fractional’s co-founder puts the saving at 30–60% against a full-time hire.

Signs you need one

  • Your work looks different across agencies, markets or languages
  • Approvals take too long, involve too many people and run to too many rounds
  • You launch every few months, but nobody senior owns the creative
  • You have good in-house designers, but no one to lead them
  • You are between hires, or covering a long leave
  • You are entering a new market and need the brand to travel well

If two or more sound familiar, a fractional lead is worth a conversation. If none do, you probably need production capacity instead.

How to hire a good fractional creative director

  • Experience leading work in your sector, not just making it
  • A portfolio that shows campaigns they directed from brief to launch
  • Clear days, hours and response times written into the agreement
  • A short minimum term, so both sides can test the fit
  • Agreed ownership: final files and work belong to you
  • An NDA before you share launch plans or prices

Questions

Quick answers

Talk about fractional
Is fractional the same as part-time?

Not quite. A part-time employee is on your payroll. A fractional creative director works with you on a business-to-business contract, usually alongside one or two other companies, and brings senior experience you could not otherwise afford full-time.

How many days a week does a fractional creative director work?

Usually one or two days a week, sometimes more around a launch. The days are agreed in writing.

Do I need to sponsor a visa for a fractional creative director in the UAE?

No. Fractional work is a business-to-business arrangement, so you do not take on visa, insurance or end-of-service costs.

What is the difference between a fractional CMO and a fractional creative director?

A fractional CMO owns marketing strategy, budgets and channels. A fractional creative director owns the creative work itself: the ideas, the standard, the briefs and the sign-off. Many companies need the second before the first.

Can a fractional creative director work remotely?

Yes. Most work is a mix of remote work and time on site for reviews, shoots and launch meetings.

What is the minimum commitment?

It varies. At Konfianz it is three months, then month to month.
